A lot of WordPress sites collect traffic data, but that data never becomes a usable audience. You can see who converted, who abandoned, or who visited key pages, yet your ad platforms still do not get a clean list to work with.

That is the gap our remarketing export feature is meant to close. With Must-Have Analytics, you can segment visitors inside WordPress and export audience files for Meta, TikTok, or Google Ads, using the filters you already rely on in your reports.

Why remarketing export is useful in the first place

Most analytics tools stop at reporting. They tell you what happened, but they do not help you act on it without pushing your data into another stack.

Our approach is more practical from a WordPress perspective. If you already track sessions, goals, and visitor profiles on your own site, you should be able to turn that into a remarketing audience without rebuilding the segment somewhere else.

That matters because useful audiences are usually very specific, for example:

  • people who reached a lead goal in the last 30 days
  • visitors who abandoned a cart
  • users from a certain country or device type
  • recent buyers you want to exclude from acquisition campaigns
  • visitors tied to a particular traffic source or date range

Must-Have Analytics can export these audiences with properly hashed emails and phone numbers, as required by the ad platforms. In other words, you build the segment in WordPress, then upload the file to your ad platform’s audience manager.

Step 1: Make sure your site is collecting the right data

Before you export anything, your setup needs to capture entity data. Remarketing exports depend on reports that include visitor profiles with contact information.

What to enable

  1. Install and activate Must-Have Analytics.
  2. Go to WordPress Admin → Must-Have Analytics → Settings.
  3. In the General tab, review these settings:
Tracking Cookie: enable if your consent setup allows it and you want more accurate returning-visitor tracking
Profiling: enable if you want to collect email, phone, and name data from forms, registrations, or checkouts
Raw Data Retention: choose a retention period that fits your privacy policy and marketing needs
  4. Save your settings if needed. Most settings auto-save when changed.

Important privacy note

Profiling is optional, and it should only be enabled when you have the right legal basis and consent setup for your site. When profiling is off, the plugin anonymizes IP addresses and does not store personal profile data, which means there is much less to export for remarketing.

If you need implementation details, see our Must-Have Analytics docs.

Step 2: Choose a report that supports audience export

Remarketing export is available on reports that include entity-level data. This is where many users make the wrong turn. They look at a broad traffic report, but not every report is meant to produce an audience file.

Use one of these report areas instead:

  1. Must-Have Analytics → Sessions
  2. Must-Have Analytics → Goals
  3. If you run WooCommerce, relevant WooCommerce reports such as:
    Purchase Trends
    Abandoned Carts
    Failed Orders
    Refunds

A good rule is simple: start with the report closest to the audience you want.

For example:

  • Want cart abandoners, use the WooCommerce abandoned cart report.
  • Want people who achieved a signup goal, use the Goals report.
  • Want recent engaged visitors from a campaign, start in Sessions and apply filters.

Step 3: Filter the audience you actually want

This is the most important step. The export will respect your current filters, so the quality of your audience depends on how carefully you narrow the report first.

Example audience: newsletter signups from the last 30 days

  1. Go to Must-Have Analytics → Goals.
  2. Open the goal you want to work with, such as Newsletter Signup.
  3. Set the date range to Last 30 days.
  4. Apply any additional filters that match your campaign logic.
  5. Confirm that the visible results match the audience you want.

Other useful segment ideas

  1. Recent purchasers for upsell campaigns.
  2. Abandoned carts for recovery campaigns.
  3. Lead form submitters for exclusion audiences.
  4. Traffic from a specific campaign or source for audience refinement.
  5. Visitors by country or device when campaign targeting differs by region or platform.

The point is not to export everyone. The point is to export a segment with a clear marketing use.

Step 4: Export the remarketing file

Once the report is filtered, the export itself is straightforward.

  1. In the report, click the Remarketing Export button.
  2. Choose the destination platform format:
    Meta (Facebook/Instagram)
    TikTok
    Google Ads
  3. Download the generated audience file.

Must-Have Analytics automatically hashes emails and phone numbers with SHA-256 for these remarketing exports, which is what the ad platforms expect for customer list uploads.

This is one part of the feature we like because it removes a messy manual step. You do not need to clean and hash the data in a spreadsheet before using it.

Step 5: Upload the file to your ad platform

The plugin handles the export file. The final audience creation happens in your ad account.

Meta or TikTok

  1. Open your ad platform’s audience manager.
  2. Create a custom audience or customer list audience.
  3. Upload the exported file from Must-Have Analytics.
  4. Name the audience based on the segment and date range.
  5. Let the platform process and match the hashed identifiers.

Google Ads

  1. Open your Google Ads audience or customer match workflow.
  2. Upload the exported file.
  3. Label the list clearly so you know what segment it represents.
  4. Use it for targeting, exclusions, or lookalike-style audience workflows where applicable.

The exact upload screens vary by platform, but the practical workflow stays the same: build segment in WordPress, export, upload, use in campaigns.

What to watch out for before you rely on the audience

Remarketing export is useful, but it is not magic.

Keep these points in mind:

  1. No profile data means no strong audience file. If profiling is disabled, you may not have enough identifiers for meaningful audience matching.
  2. Filters matter. A vague report export creates a vague audience.
  3. Date ranges matter. A 7-day list and a 180-day list behave very differently in ad campaigns.
  4. Platform match rates vary. Even a clean file will not match every person in Meta, TikTok, or Google Ads.
  5. Consent and privacy still apply. If you use profiling and audience exports, make sure your site disclosures and data handling are aligned with your legal requirements.

In practice, the best results usually come from smaller, more intentional segments, not giant all-visitor dumps.

Take-home message

If you already use Must-Have Analytics to track goals, sessions, or WooCommerce activity, remarketing export gives you a direct way to turn that WordPress data into campaign audiences.

The setup is simple: enable the right data collection, open a report that supports entity export, apply tight filters, and export the audience for Meta, TikTok, or Google Ads. Done properly, it keeps your analytics and audience-building workflow much closer to your own site.

If you want to try it on your own setup, explore Must-Have Analytics and see our docs for the report and privacy details that fit your workflow.
